Autoptic 2018 Creative Fitness Summit

The Autoptic festival is collaborating to bring artists into a fitness setting! Join us Friday at the Downtown YMCA's Powerhouse studio for an hour of functional fitness instruction in a group setting. All skill levels and body types are welcome to workout with special instruction by cartoonist and personal trainer M.S. Harkness.

This is a free event, specifically programmed to address the unique needs for artist's bodies. Attendees are encouraged to work at their own pace and ask questions regarding fitness for creative people. There are onsite showers and all-gender family style changing areas. Attendees should wear clothes they feel comfortable exercising in, there is no required equipment.

M.S. Harkness is a certified Personal Trainer with the National Academy of Sports Medicine and a level 1 sports performance coach with USA Weightlifting. She is a special guest at Autoptic and her book Tinderella is published with Kilgore Books.

Light Grey Art Lab is collaborating with the Autoptic team to host a celebratory pre-party and exhibition leading up to AUTOPTIC 2018! Special guests from the festival, including Gabrielle Bell (Everything is Flammable, The Voyeurs, Truth is Fragmentary), M.S. Harkness (Tinderella), and Zak Sally (Sammy the Mouse, Like a Dog, founder of Uncivilized Books) will be displaying original and printed work. This panel’s cartoonists will discuss gods, vampires, dungeoneers, and other old friends, covering different approaches to capturing the fantastic and what inspires them to keep it weird.

What’s Next for YA Comics

Stories for young adult readers have become one of the most popular, inclusive, and creative areas within comics. In this panel, artists will share their hopes, headaches, and other reflections about the YA comics explosion.

Vulnerability in Comics

Aaron King (Moderator), Alexis Cooke, John Porcellino, Sage Coffey

Vulnerability is a subject common to comics both autobiographical and not. In this discussion, cartoonists will talk about how they've shared stories about moments beyond their comfort zones.
